Guide to spaces

There are 11 different BLANKBOOK spaces. From the handy Strindberg Small giving 0,7 m² of blank space to fill to the spacious Living Large with 10,65 m².

They are developed from the excitement of exploring different qualities and sizes of collected material as well as addressing different notebooks needs. You will not find any of the standard formats such as A4 or A5. BLANKBOOK offers other spaces to be in.

Space no. 1

Strindberg Small

This space is named after the notebook that the Swedish author Strindberg used while in Germany and Paris between 1893 and 1895. It was stolen from the National Library of Sweden in the 1970’s but discovered at an auction house in 2022. Strindberg used it to write down names, addresses and drawings.

We tend to adopt our writing to the space available so it surprisingly fits a lot considering the size. It rests comfortable in the palm of a hand and is great if you want to move around without carrying even the smallest bag or having heavy pockets.

Suitable for:

Hunt and gather words on the go, collect favorite words, one-word diary, sketches and ideas that come while moving around.

Pocket Partner

I spoke to a poet that expressed his frustration over the smaller formats being too thin, he ran out of pages too quick. He struggled to find the note he was looking for in all his separate smaller books. This space is created with him in mind. Small and portabel but still holds 3 square meters on 200 pages of smooth cream white paper in 115 gsm. Also available in a thinner format with 40 pages for those who like the idea of changing book more often!

Suitable for:

Taking notes, sketches – what ever you capture moving around physically or mentally by your desk.

Space:
  • 3,1 m² – 200 pages
  • 0,62 m² – 40 pages

Standing Tall

Standing Tall is developed to get an overview of your daily to-do’s, goals and projects. This format was used in the Middle Ages for accounting books and different types of keep-lists. It was also a common format to publish rhyming chronicles and knittel vers, a germanic verse meter used in drama and satirical poetry. Thanks to the blank pages – you are free to fill it your way.

The edges of the book are rounded to easily slip into your pocket. When closed it fits nicely in the hand and when open – a square of 200 *200 mm is presented.  The majority of Standing Tall have a 12o gsm warm white paper.

Suitable for:

Bullet journalling, logbook, any type of planning and documentation that benefits from a portable and vertical format.

  • 2 m² – 100 pages

Triobook

When you open this triangle shaped book a square spread is presented. Triobook can stand in different ways and serve as an ornament for your desk. The square spread with a diagonal fold challenges the familiar shape of notebooks. Your writing and drawing have to relate to the new borders and maybe new thoughts and things emerge as as a result of that?

Suitable for:

Paper sculpture, examinations of how different writing spaces affect your interactions, drawing, sketching and writing.

Oktobook

The joy of this format is all the different ways it can be by your side. A book usually lays on its back or stands on a shelve with the spine visible, Oktobook has many different ways that it can stand.  Thanks to the double amount of sides in a common book it can serve as a sculptural object on your desk, shelve or window still. The octagon spread is less familiar to us so something happens when you interact with it!

Suitable for:

Paper sculpture, examinations of how different writing spaces affect your interactions, drawing, sketching and writing.

Square 155

This space is developed from saved waste paper from a printshop and a desire to explore what a square notebook space would be like, examining the square as a symbol, ornament and as a functional form.

Square 155 is a versatile space for writing and drawing, on the go or by the desk. The spreads are generous for a portable format but not too big to put in a big pocket or a small bag. It has plenty of pages so there is no reason to hold back. For smaller projects the pamphlet stitch variation with 40 pages is the perfect partner.

Suitable for:

Morning pages, sketching and drawing, on the go or by the desk.

Spaces:
  • 0,96 m² – 40 pages
  • 4,8 m²  – 200 pages
  • 5,8 m² – 240 pages

Square 200

Being larger than Square 155 more space is offered before you have to turn the page and start a new spread. You can find it with  40, 200 or 240 pages. The 40 pager has a thinner 120 gsm embossed cover in eight different colors and will be available soon.

Square 200 has a 120 gsm inlay paper that is of the stiffer kind. It is very smooth with a slight sheen but nonetheless an untreated surface. All pens run really smooth but needs a little bit longer drying time for liquid ink.

Suitable for:

Sketching, drawing, planning, process mapping.

Spaces:
  • 8 m² – 200 pages
  • 8,8 m² –220 pages
  • 1,6 m² – 40 pages

Square 220

Expanding the size of the square even further gives the experience of how size matters switching between the three different square spaces. The writing and sketching changes having to relate to the borders of the spread. The 200 pages make it quite heavy, 550 grams. This is the largest and the heaviest BLANKBOOK space.

Suitable for:

If you want a lot of space on the page and a lot of them for drawing and/or writing.

Laying Low

This is a horisontal space perfect for weekly plans or as bullet journal turned the other way with the spine horisontal. It has the same width as Square 220, so they go well together to keep planning separate from notes. For the list maker this could be a way to keep the lists as a documentation of your desired actions over time.

Suitable for:

Those who favor space horizontally for process drawing, technical drawings, visualizing development as well as mindmapping and listmaking.

Horisontal Habitat

This space was developed from watching how architects use the process of sketching as a central method in their professional life alongside advanced computer programs. Horisontal Habitat facilitates an overview of development of ideas with a spread span of 62 centimeters and 120 pages. It can be folded around its back if space is tight, otherwise it is just to enjoy the width of the spread allowing you to flow without being interrupted by turning the page.

Suitable for:
